Biography of Ronald B. House
Dr. Ronald B. House, is presently the CEO, Executive Vice President of the American Disabilities
Institute for Research and Training, Inc. He first became involved with Independent Living Movement
in 1980, when he worked with Lex Frieden, ILRU of Houston, Texas to develop a management training
simulation for CILs. House has developed several management simulations, and has published research
and management articles on the management of human service organizations.
During the period of 2000 to
2005 he was co-principal investigator of the National Research and Rehabilitation Training Center-
Independent Living Management Project funded by NIDRR. His primary responsibilities were to design,
develop and test strategies to enable CILs to benefit from management models of other successful
community-based organizations. The research project was a five-year study. In addition, House oversaw
the implementation of training courses and the dissemination of learning materials to CILs
and SILCs through distance learning, regional and national conferences.
Dr. House has a doctoral degree
from Cornell University and thirty years managing federal funded national and regional training projects
at Cornell in Independent Living, Supported Employment, Community Rehabilitation and Technical
Assistance. While at Cornell University he was on the faculty of the NYS School of Industrial and
Labor Relations and the College of Human Ecology retiring in 1996 after thirty years at Cornell.
In 1997 he co-authored a five-year grant on training for Community Rehabilitation Programs at the
University of Buffalo. In 1999 he teamed up with the faculty of the University of Buffalo and the
director of the Western New York Independent Living Center to compete for the first CIL consumer
directed Research and Training Center. The competition for the grant was successful and the coalition
established the RR & TC in 2000.
Dr. House has been involved in providing training and continuing
education since his employment at Cornell University from 1968 to the present. He has been and continues
to be the director or co-director of several national rehabilitation service grants. Dr. House has
conducted international training courses in Canada and Europe and serves on state and federal advisory
boards on disability policy.
