COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
INTRODUCTION TO SUPERVISORY MANAGEMENT FOR ILC STAFF This course is an introduction to supervisory management and the role and functions performed by a supervisor.
The course is designed for new supervisors and supervisors that have not had a formal course in supervision.
(coordinators of independent living specialist, service coordinators, community services supervisors,
administrative office supervisors an other supervisors etc.) The topics for the course include definitions
of management, styles of management, making effective work assignments, communication, training employees,
and obtaining results. The course combines lecture with "critical incidents" often faced by supervisors as
class problem assignments. A reference manual will be provided.

DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE INDEPENDENT LIVING BOARD/STAFF RELATIONSHIPS This two-day Board of Directors course will begin on a Friday afternoon (3:00pm-9:00pm) and
concluded Saturday at 3:00pm). The time schedule will allow board members to use their time effectively and still maintain
time for weekend events. The session will focus on developing the vision/mission of the ILC, fundamental responsibilities of
individual board members, job descriptions and committee charges, an the nine functions of operating a center and the implication
for board and ILC management. The presentation will include a video of an ILC board in operation followed by a discussion of 25
questions of board management. A workbook and instructional materials will be provided to all participants. If possible, two
members of an ILC board should attend.

TRAINING THE TRAINER FOR IN-HOUSE PRESENTATIONS The two day course is designed to provide basic information or what knowledge is required to be
an effective trainer. The supervisor is often the trainer. The focus of the course is to improve supervisor's knowledge of
training methods in order to develop more effective staff, upgrade the overall quality of personnel in technical skills, and
create an organizational climate of staff development. The course will present information on the training function, the
instructional process, how to instruct, defining instructional needs, how people learn, job analysis, the lesson plan, organize
the training function, and training evaluation. The class will include lecture, videos and discussion with the opportunity for a
presentation "lecturette" by participants. A workbook and reference readings are included.
