COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
INTRODUCTION TO SUPERVISORY MANAGEMENT FOR ILC STAFF This course is an introduction to supervisory management and the role and functions performed by a supervisor.
The course is designed for new supervisors and supervisors that have not had a formal course in supervision.
(coordinators of independent living specialist, service coordinators, community services supervisors,
administrative office supervisors an other supervisors etc.) The topics for the course include definitions
of management, styles of management, making effective work assignments, communication, training employees,
and obtaining results. The course combines lecture with "critical incidents" often faced by supervisors as
class problem assignments. A reference manual will be provided.

DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE INDEPENDENT LIVING BOARD/STAFF RELATIONSHIPS This two-day Board of Directors course will begin on a Friday afternoon (3:00pm-9:00pm) and
concluded Saturday at 3:00pm). The time schedule will allow board members to use their time effectively and still maintain
time for weekend events. The session will focus on developing the vision/mission of the ILC, fundamental responsibilities of
individual board members, job descriptions and committee charges, an the nine functions of operating a center and the implication
for board and ILC management. The presentation will include a video of an ILC board in operation followed by a discussion of 25
questions of board management. A workbook and instructional materials will be provided to all participants. If possible, two
members of an ILC board should attend.

EMERGENCY PLANNING FOR CENTERS FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING: MEETING THE STANDARDS (See Website on Workshop: www.schoolsafetyspecialist.com)
Emergency preparedness is the preparation and planning necessary to effectively handle an emergency.
Every organization regardless of the nature of their business must plan and prepare for the types of emergencies that could impact
their Centers, placing staff, consumers, students or others in harm’s way.
This two day workshop (9:00AM to 4:00PM) will provide managers, CIL staff, and safety and emergency response personnel from Centers
for Independent Living organizations with the training and resources necessary to return to their respective Centers and implement
an Emergency Plan consistent with Federal guidelines. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) step-by-step citizens guidelines
will also assist in guiding this process. Access to this free publication will be made available. The Federal Citizens Preparedness
Guide will be explained and its use illustrated. The trainers will show participants a new edition of a model emergency plan that
can be implemented into their organization. Workbooks will be provided to participants.
The instructors, will utilize the standardized National Incident Management System (NIMS) to provide practical preparedness training
focusing on the tasks of Mitigation / Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery. Participants will participate in very practical
user friendly simulation exercises during the afternoon. The course length is for two days; allowing participants to develop their
own plans and response skills with the guidance of the trainers. Technical Assistance can be arranged for on-site assistance through
a consultant contract fee for service.

The two day course is designed to provide basic information or what knowledge is required to be
an effective trainer. The supervisor is often the trainer. The focus of the course is to improve supervisor's knowledge of
training methods in order to develop more effective staff, upgrade the overall quality of personnel in technical skills, and
create an organizational climate of staff development. The course will present information on the training function, the
instructional process, how to instruct, defining instructional needs, how people learn, job analysis, the lesson plan, organize
the training function, and training evaluation. The class will include lecture, videos and discussion with the opportunity for a
presentation "lecturette" by participants. A workbook and reference readings are included.
